On to Lamego Riding along the Douro Valley

We left Porto early, one more tart and on the road for 9.30 the idea being to make the most of the cool morning air. Quite an easy run out out of Porto itself, heading East along the Douro to meet the N222. The first part of the ride was North of the river, later crossing to the south bank.

We came across this Dam and saw others too, the Sandemans guide yesterday explained how in the old days before these dams the cellars in Porto flooded quite frequently leaving the barrels to float, without affecting the contents at all.

Old wine carafes dumped by the side of the road.

Stunning views across the valley.

As we got closer to Lamego, the vinyards  became more common until eventually each bank and any spare land was taken up with vines as far as the eye can see.

Eventually after about 70 miles of winding through the valley - really twisty just how we like them with temperature  rising to the mid thirties we reached the town of Lamego and headed out to find the camp site where we planned on staying the night. Just a kilometre out of town we  found this great little camp site, part of a vineyard itself, where the pitches are stepped between vines.

'A room with a view' Quite amazing. All mine for 10 Euro a night !

At the back of the camp site there are caves used to store bottles of wine.

We pitched up in the afternoon .... Plenty of space under a plum tree and made a brew ...

More views across the valley.

Camp site grounds.

we spent the afternoon sat on our terrace and made some repairs to my camp bed. Found the leak and used some of Lindsay's duct tape to fix. Hopefully that's sorted now and I get a good nights sleep. Here's Lindsay fixing his GoPro to his helmet, the chest mount he was using today didn't quite work well enough.

Camp bed fix....I hope!!

Not sure what we will do tonight, the town looks great with an amazing staircase feature built into the hill we noticed on the ride in, but it's a bit of a walk in, and since I have a great view and some instant noodles I bought from home I'm tempted to stay put this evening and just chill. The camp site man sells beer and wine, it would be a shame to leave without trying some !! More later.
