Porto

After breakfast (see earlier post) we walked down the huge hill from the hotel into Porto town. Most of the buildings seem in need if repair, old stucco plaster, rusted iron work balconies and rotted wood. As we got closer to the town we stopped at one of the little shops to buy water from our Indian friend we had met last night, trying to sell us tea towels with cockerels on the front. Lindsay had just bought himself a selfie stick from a shop earlier and he tried to convince him he had been ripped off he had 'same one for i do for less money', I bought some more stickers for my panniers. Lindsay seemed really pleased with his new toy and marvelled at how well it worked from all sorts of angles. I can bet he has hundreds of photos of himself AND his bike now after this trip... Steph watch out!

So we headed for the Market ...

Old Market

Port wine

Commercial square.

Cheap bottles of Port.

The selection of fancies. The tarts are second row second from right, I found out the actual name of them on the back of a postcard in a shop...

Railway station frescos.

Cathedral.

The River Douro

Lads jumping off the bridge !

Old barges used to transport the Port.

We took the guided tour at Sandemans, a well known Port house, where we got to sample some port both white and red. We also visited where they store it to wait for at least 4 years before bottling be using great oak vats or smaller barrels depending on the type of grape etc.

Now for my sardines, and Codfish!

The path back up the hill to bed!
